Scooter Accident Dangers on Fickett Avenue in Boyle Heights Los Angeles

Electric scooter riders are owed a “duty of care” from Los Angeles drivers no matter where they may encounter one another. This legal duty of care means motorists must constantly monitor the lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks for pedestrians and riders. They must hit the brakes and slow down as much as needed in order to make sure no collision is possible. Any crash can leave motorists fully responsible for the injuries that result.

The special duty of care is part of California traffic law due to the extreme vulnerability of those on scooters when confronting fast-moving and heavy vehicles. In a crash, riders can suffer serious injuries. These accidents may also leave victims underneath vehicles to suffer traumatic injuries and easily put their lives placed in jeopardy

Scooter Rider Dragged After Weekend Accident in Boyle Heights

An electric scooter rider in Los Angeles was part of a frightening accident that ended with him being dragged down the street by a vehicle. KABC reports the collision occurred Saturday night in Boyle Heights along Fickett Avenue on August 27, 2022.

LAPD officers say the scary incident began when the scooter rider swerved to avoid getting hit by a car. He was left off-balance and then fell off the scooter and lost consciousness in the street.

A short time later a white Ford van drove up, ran over the scooter and the victim. The man was dragged for about 25 feet before he was able to disconnect from the van. This terrifying ordeal was captured in its entirety by surveillance footage released by the LAPD Central Traffic Division.

The victim was rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. He was admitted to the intensive care unit but is expected to recover.

Investigators say the driver of the white van did not remain on the scene. They are looking for the hit-and-run suspect. There is a $25,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. If you have any information about the driver or the van please call the Los Angeles Police Department.

Making Sure Victims Receive the Support They Require After an L.A. Scooter Accident

Los Angeles scooter users ride defenseless and even with a helmet on, any collision can prove devastating. Drivers can be held liable for the consequences of any scooter accident no matter where they occur.

A victim or the victim’s family is encouraged to file a claim for damages against the driver’s car insurance provider. This civil claim would ask for support to pay for all recovery costs and hospital bills. The income the victim lost while having to miss work should also be covered.

In the case of Los Angeles scooter accidents involving a hit-and-run driver, financial assistance may be attainable even if the suspect isn’t identified. Victims could file accident claims with their own car insurance provider under the uninsured motorist section of the policy. When victims don’t have auto insurance, they should check to see if they’re covered on a family member’s policy.
